After a four year break, Jane and I attended the Seward Mermaid Festival. It’s a great way to kick off the summer season in Alaska. A fun weekend of music, vendors, food, drink, and hanging out with our neighbor’s Ron and MJ.
It was a typical Alaska coastal weather weekend. Rain, sunshine, wind and a whole lot of beauty sprinkled in.
You can’t have a Mermaid Festival without a beer garden.
A uniquely Alaska coffee bus. It’s named after a nearby coastal landform.
I bet you haven’t seen snowmobiles tricked out in aqua colors and octupi before.
This vendor caught my eye.
It was probably all the clever stickers. Clearly, The Sticker King of Alaska.
Capt. Randy, a local musician, played at the Breeze Inn Friday night. He plays original music and will take requests as well. During a break I asked if he would play “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. Before the night was over, he did. It was a wonderful version that clearly honored the late great Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks, Capt. Randy.
Blackwater Railroad Trio was one of five bands that played outdoors on Saturday.
Definitely plenty of people dressing up for the weekend.
Adult mermaids…
Children mermaids…
A mer-dog and a pirate.
The Pub Crawl on Friday night.
Not related to the Mermaid Festival, this ship pulled into the Seward harbor Saturday afternoon. I knew it was military, but I had no idea what it was. Fortunately, I knew one guy who would know and that would be Ron. I texted him the photo and he said it’s the USS Zumwalt Stealth Destroyer, a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy. It came into Seward to refuel. The timing couldn’t have been better considering Saturday was Armed Forces Day (thank you to all that served and are currently serving).
Well, that’s about it for the 2023 Seward Mermaid Festival. Don’t forget that tomorrow is Memorial Day. Make sure to take a moment to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
