I got a late night call from my friend Boo of Tall Tale Charters asking if Jane and I wanted to try to catch a saltwater king before the season closed on May 15th (the area from Anchor Point to Anchorage closes).
Oh, heck yeah. Cabin chores can wait.
In our first hour of trolling for king salmon we caught a couple of cod.
In the next couple of hours, Jane caught a small halibut.
We thought about moving, but a report from friends fishing a couple of miles away were poor. They said there were twelve boats in the area and only one king salmon was landed.
Well, we gave king salmon fishing a good try. It was time to switch things up and chase a fish that’s in abundance, halibut.
The halibut caught in early May tend to run on the small side. We were pleasantly surprised to reel up a couple of 40lbers.
All in all, it was a great day out in Cook Inlet with Boo, Oliver, Brad, and Jane.
Come back next week. I’ll be blogging about the Seward Mermaid Festival.
