On the first day of the fishing week the action was slow. I’m not lying when I say it was rather disappointing. However, as the week wore on the fishing improved.
It improved a lot.
With four consecutive days of sonar counts over 100K, the fishing was incredible.

I spent Sunday fishing with Bill, Rodney, Pete, Parker and Doug. With a sonar count of 17K, our hook up rate was not good. It’s the old saying that you can’t catch what’s not there. Here’s Bill with the total day’s catch.
On Monday, the fish started to show. I fished with good friends Dick and Kim Miller, and Mike and Jodie Stacken. It was steady action throughout the day.

The next day, I fished the same crew. The river was full of salmon and we were done by 7am. By far the best action of the season.

It’s not often I run two trips in a day (I’m old), but on Tuesday my friend Matt wanted to celebrate his birthday fishing on the river with his wife Kelly and friends Rick and Lori. The fishing remained hot and we were done with our limits in a couple of hours.

On Wednesday, the Miller’s and Stacken’s booked a third day under one condition, Jane had to come too. What a great gesture!
The fishing was so good that we were able to clean and process our catch and make it to Louie’s for a hot breakfast.

It’s rare to have an action photo of me while I’m guiding, but Jane snapped this incredible sunrise pic.

On Thursday, Tom, Blake, Derek, and Tim continued the streak of fast fishing and easy limits. We were back home by 7:00am.

I always look forward to this. Since 2014 I’ve been able to spend time fishing with three generations of the Chesney’s; Martin, Chris, and Jacob. I’m amazed how fast Little Jake has become Big Jake. We found plenty of fish moving through Friday morning. They sure planned their trip for the right days.
The fishing week ended with Team Chesney once again and a bonus angler. Long time readers may recognize the man on the left as Gary Blinn. He normally spends the month of August with us on the even years. He couldn’t wait that long and came up this year to get in on the red salmon action. Another great morning with a bunch of great guys.
For the week ahead I expect the red salmon action to continue. Some days will be active, on others, we may have to spend all day fishing to get our limits. That’s just the nature of a salmon run that follows a bell curve.
See you next Sunday for the first fishing report of August.
