They’re heeeere…at least in the beginning of the week they were.
The day after my last blogpost, the Kenai River red salmon sonar count jumped to 20K. The day after that, 54K. The numbers had been solid all week, but unfortunately the success rates didn’t always reflect that. It makes you wonder about the accuracy of the sonar counter. I digress
The first four days of the week I fished with Josh, Caleb, Steven, and Robert. On day one it rained like crazy, but the constant action made up for the minor inconvenience.
The second day of their trip was much like the first day. A decent pulse of fish moved through for most of the morning.
On day three the weather was incredible, but the fishing action didn’t quite match the conditions. We definitely had to put our time in to find these fish. Still, a pretty good day.
On the 4th day the schools of fish were sporadic throughout the entire day. Some early morning action, a whole lot of nothing, then a better finish. Most anglers would have called it good mid day, but these guys kept chugging along.
I had a great time with Josh, Caleb, Robert, and Steven. It’s not very often that I spend 4 straight days on the banks with the same group. I look forward to their next visit to Alaska.
My next guests were Team Strowbridge. On day one it was a slow morning, but late in the afternoon the fish showed up. Perseverance and attitude made all the difference. From left to right are Emma, Nic, and Chad.
On Friday, ADFG liberalized the sport caught limit from 3 to 6. I often say just because the limit goes up it doesn’t mean the fishing is better. Case in point, Chad and Nic are very accomplished fisherman and in 11 hours they caught 2 fish.
They weren’t alone. Reports from all around the river were similar.
Notice no fish in this picture? We didn’t catch any on the final day of the week. Bill, Rodney, Pete, Parker, and Doug gave it a good shot, but the fish were nowhere to be found. Tomorrow the same crew will be out with me in search of 6 reds a piece. Wish us luck.
For the week ahead, if the buzz in the community is correct, there’s a big ball of red salmon waiting to come in to the river. I sure hope so.
See you next week for the last fishing report of July.
