Fishing Report Week Ending 6/4/23

June 4, 2023 //  by beavercreek

Homer…..again!

Every year my friend Boo lets his boys, Carson and Oliver, pick a day to go fishing. They get their own day on the water and can invite whoever they want. This year Oliver chose June 1st for the day of his trip. A couple of his friends couldn’t make it so Oliver extended an invite to me.

I gladly accepted.

Along with Boo and Oliver, Andrew and Rebel filled out the crew.

It was a beautiful, early morning drive from Kenai to Homer. With little wind and no rain in the forecast, conditions would be ideal for a 40 mile run to the fishing grounds.

I counted 19 moose on the drive to Homer. That seems like a lot, and it is, but when Jane and I made the drive a couple of weeks ago we saw close to 40 moose. It was a tough winter, but the lower Kenai Peninsula has one of the highest moose densities in the state right now.

It’s always an exciting feeling leaving the Homer harbor. I think it’s the anticipation of what lies ahead.

It wouldn’t be Homer without seeing the Time Bandit in port.

We got out to a spot where Boo had decent luck this week. The fish were still there. Here’s Oliver reeling in the first fish of many.

Captain Boo with a chunky black rockfish.

The final haul.  A nice mix of black rockfish, pacific cod, and halibut. From left to right is Rebel, Oliver, Andrew, and me. Thanks, Oliver, for letting me be part of your group.

Other fishing reports…

The first run of red salmon are starting to make their way through the lower Kenai River.  My neighbor Dave is the first guy I know to catch one.

Also, the saltwater fishing for king salmon out of Seward has been very good. I had plans to fish there this week with Boo, but mechanical issues on his boat put an end to that. We’re planning on doing it next year.

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week.
