Last week I blogged about fishing proverbs. This week, I’m blogging about fishing chants.
There is a difference.
A fishing proverb is a saying related to fishing. A fishing chant are words repeated over and over that often bring good luck while fishing.
Growing up, my father taught me this fish chant.
Fishy, fishy, in the brook, come and bite on Keithy’s hook.
I wore that chant out.
About the only thing that would slow me down is when my father gave me a Bit-O-Honey candy to chew on. If you know anything about a Bit-O-Honey, it’s awfully hard to talk and chew at the same time. Hmmm, so you wonder why I was a chubby kid…
Sometimes fishing chants work, sometimes they don’t. The absolute best fishing chant successfully working was recorded on video by my friend Francis. The epic event happened 20 years ago while he was out fishing for king salmon with his buddies. It features a cameo of another friend, Tim. Watch the chaos that ensues.
“Down goes the rod. We gotta bite, mahhn!”
A little background on the genesis of this chant. Francis has four daughters, the eyeFISH Jr League, and they all grew up fishing with dad. Marci came up with a chant to bring good luck to the boat. Now that Francis has grandkids, the fish chant has been passed on to the next generation of the eyeFISH Jr League. No doubt, it will to the generation after that, and after that, and after that…
Next time you’re out on the water and you realize desperate times require desperate measures, find this fish chant video on YouTube and sing along with Francis. Even if it doesn’t bring you luck, it’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
Anyone else have a secret fishing chant they want to share? The Baby Shark song? “Either you get ‘em, or you get ‘em” (thanks Dino). Tell your tale in the comment section.
