2020 Board of Fisheries Recap

February 23, 2020 //  by beavercreek

The times they are a-changin'. If you are as wonky about Alaska fish politics as I am, the proposals that passed, and the proposals that were defeated, can be found here. Here's a two word recap: conservation won. Allowing more fish to enter the rivers of Upper Cook Inlet is a good thing. It's sound science and it speaks to …

2020 AK Fishery Changes

February 9, 2020 //  by beavercreek

It’s day three of AK Board of Fisheries meetings and already there are changes to the fishery. Ironically, these changes are from the International Pacific Halibut Commission, and not the Board of Fisheries and will affect the halibut  fishery in South Central Alaska. Charter operators will be unable to book halibut …

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has released the 2020 Kenai River king salmon forecast. The early run (May/June) forecast is 4,794. Dedication

January 26, 2020 //  by beavercreek

Okay. I admit it. That looks miserable. That's Audria Bloch hunkered down on the boat ride to one of my secret silver salmon spots this past September.  I like fishing the Kenai any time I can, but September is my favorite month. Why you ask? Less anglers, and more fishing action. What's not to like about that? But, …

Whoopsie

January 19, 2020 //  by beavercreek

I’m sure there’s a backstory about why this boat was left high and dry on the Beaver Creek gravel bar. Did they run out of gas? Did they have a medical emergency and abandon the boat? Probably neither. I think the real reason was inattention/distraction during a falling tide. File this under, “Things you don’t want …

Who Knew???

January 12, 2020 //  by beavercreek

Dog salmon. Chum salmon. Calico salmon. Keta salmon. These are various names used to identify the fish pictured above.  Since 1985, I’ve fished the Kenai River and feel like I’ve seen most everything. A group this past summer called me the Farmer’s Insurance Guide because “I know a thing or two because I’ve seen a thing or …

Long time readers know this well: I almost always post on Sundays. It’s a habit of mine. And, it’s also been a habit of my core readers. How do I know this? Well, if I miss a Sunday, Jane or I will often be contacted to see if I’m okay. It’s humbling to know I have such dedicated followers like that. So why Sundays?  The …
