Let me start out by saying it was an awesome summer for temperatures in Alaska. We had three days in Kenai/Soldotna where temperatures broke 70 degrees. Three whole days! And, would you believe I wore wool socks every day on the river? Lower 48 triple digit temperatures versus wool socks. Hmmm, I think many of you reading this …
Whiteboard Wrap Up
It’s always a nice surprise when guests leave us notes at the end of their stay…cards, hand written notes, and messages on whiteboards. Your feedback is always appreciated! Without further ado, here are the winners of the 2023 Best In Whiteboard Platitudes. …
The Dock Is Out
It’s always a sad day when the dock is taken out. It was especially hard this year because of the beautiful fall weather we’re having. Unlike the problems we had putting the dock in this past July, a high, high tide made the work much easier. Detach the dock from the gang plank, float the dock to the grass …
Fishing Report Week Ending 9/23/23
Like the falling temperatures, the silver salmon run is starting to decline. Sure, we caught fish every day, but the bites were few and far between. This is typical of a bell curve salmon run. I didn’t just fish the river this past week. On Monday, my sister Heidi, and her friends Sara, Ann, and Sonja, joined Jane and I on a …
Fishing Report Week Ending 9/17/23
This will be a limited fishing report for two reasons. The river is blown out making fishing nearly impossible, and Jane and I took time off to celebrate the nuptials between our son, Mac, and Addie. This past week an unprecedented natural event happened when the Snow and Skilak glacier dams both burst and dumped water …
Fishing Report Week Ending 8/13/23
My prediction for this week was a bit off. I know we’re going through a transition, but the red salmon fishing has been quite good. The silver salmon are around, but not in numbers that will limit out many boats. Our focus stayed on the banks flipping for red salmon. Josh, Margret, Scott, and Norman started the week out. We …
Fishing Report Week Ending 8/6/23
Transition time. The red salmon run is up and down right now, and the silver salmon are just starting to show. It’s normal. We’re between the salmon runs and it’s hard to predict the action. On to the weekly fishing report. I fished a lot of long time guests/friends this past week. That never gets old. I was also …
Fishing Report Week Ending 7/30/23
On the first day of the fishing week the action was slow. I’m not lying when I say it was rather disappointing. However, as the week wore on the fishing improved. It improved a lot. With four consecutive days of sonar counts over 100K, the fishing was incredible. I spent Sunday fishing with Bill, Rodney, Pete, …
Fishing Report Week Ending 7/23/23
They’re heeeere…at least in the beginning of the week they were. The day after my last blogpost, the Kenai River red salmon sonar count jumped to 20K. The day after that, 54K. The numbers had been solid all week, but unfortunately the success rates didn’t always reflect that. It makes you wonder about the accuracy of the …
Fishing Report Week Ending 7/16/23
This past week we were in the catch enough fish for dinner phase of the run and not the fill up the freezer phase. We caught fish every time we were out, but so far the run has been small. Since July 1st, the lowest daily count of red salmon crossing the sonar counter has been 2,598. The most has been 8,064. Very soon the bulk of …
