USDA Forest Service Cabins

January 18, 2026 //  by beavercreek

We’d love to have everyone reading this stay at Beaver Creek Cabins & Guide Service for their Alaska adventure. Unfortunately, the reality is we’re small with limited availability during a limited season.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of other places to stay and travel to experience the grandeur of Alaska.

Most people know about cruise ships, trains, and RV rentals. However, an option often overlooked is staying in a forest service cabin.

Alaska is home to two of the nations largest national forests, the Tongass and Chugach (pronounced Choo-Gatch). Both offer cabins of varying degrees of accessibility from roadside locations to extremely remote spots requiring air taxi or a boat.

Since the heart of the Tongass is more than 600 miles away from the Kenai Peninsula, my focus will be on what’s in our backyard, the Chugach.

The Chugach is a 5.4 million acre national forest. There are 40 primitive cabins within it. Primitive means no electricity and water. If you’re looking to see Alaska with a few more amenities, this would not be your best fit.

Wildlife viewing, fishing, over 500 miles of trails to hike, there’s so much to do in the Chugach. And, it’s easy to reserve a cabin. Just go to recreation.gov.

Have fun planning!
