Whoopsie Daisy

November 5, 2023 //  by beavercreek

This seems to happen every year in the tidal areas of the Kenai River.

Some times it’s not preventable, other times it’s within the owners control.

Either way, my fear is that some day, somebody will be posting photos of my boat like the one pictured above

The reason this boat looks like Evel Knievel took it for a spin is because of dock failure during a particularly high tide event. The floating portion of the dock is attached to the permanent section of the dock with hinges. Either the owner didn’t use strong enough or long enough hinges to allow for an extra foot of rising creek water. It resulted in the dock and boat breaking away and settling high and dry on the bank when the tide receded.

This wasn’t the only event that happened on the creek this season. Another boat further upstream had a faulty seal around the wash down pump and it sunk. I never saw it with my own eyes (thus no photos), but I saw floating debris in the creek.

Part of my spring preparation will be replacing dock ropes, and double checking connections. Hopefully it will prevent unflattering photos.
