My mentor, Jeff King, use to make up guide rule numbers.
Some were legit, some were just him riffing.
For example…
Guide Rule #1. Never leave fish to find fish.
Guide Rule #8. Fish upstream from where you live just in case you run out of gas. You can always drift home.
Guide Rule #17. Don’t swear in front of your customer’s until they swear first. That way you’ll know you won’t offend them if you let out an effinheimer. Until you hear a swear word, muttering Judas Priest is an acceptable way to describe any prickly situation.
So, why the blogpost about rules. Well, I was inspired to write about them after watching this video. Specifically, Rule #5, which is one I see all the time.
You see, I fish a lot of Minnesota and Wisconsin anglers every summer and it’s almost a given that they’ll wave to other boaters on the river.
They’re disappointed when the wave back isn’t reciprocated.
Alaskans aren’t that friendly, they’ll say.

My response is they are, they just don’t want to wave because they’d be doing it all day long….
