It’s important that we remember that this weekend is more than travel, mattress sales, barbecues, car races, and fishing. Memorial Day weekend is about mourning the nation’s fallen service members. Take a moment out of your day to honor the men and women who represented the very best of our nation.
So, what was happening at Beaver Creek Cabins this past week?
A 1” copper waterline under the Chinook cabin sprung a leak.
There are two things I try to stay away from when it comes to cabin maintenance: water, and electrical issues. I’ll attempt both, but my skill set is limited.
I thought this would be a fairly straightforward fix. Cut the damaged 2” section of copper pipe out, put a Sharkbite coupling over it and problem solved.
My fix was no fix at all.
It was time to call my very capable neighbor’s, Rusty and Charlie, to make things right again.
It wasn’t an easy fix. But, the challenge of solving problems is what drives guys like Rusty and Charlie.
The solution was to cut out a 4 foot section of pipe, replace that, and solder the unions together. For good measure, a drain valve was placed on a low spot of the pipe for easy winterization.
Great work, guys. I really appreciate you bailing me out of a jam.
Along with the bad this past week, we had a nice week of wildlife viewing at the cabins.
On Monday, Jane and I saw our first moose calves of the year. They were only hours old when we spotted the family across the creek.
For the next four days they never moved more than 50 feet. It was a perfect combination of protection, food, and water. On the fifth day I did not see the moose. Mom must have recuperated post birth and the babies are now strong enough to follow mom wherever she decides to go.
Speaking of families, I walked down the dock to check on the moose and a family of river otters were playing in the creek.
I’ve seen muskrats, seals, mink, and beavers, but river otters are a first for me.
See you next week. We have friends coming to stay with us and have scheduled a saltwater fishing trip with Boo. Hopefully, the ocean will be calm and the fish will be biting.
