I had July 5th circled on my calendar for a Homer saltwater trip for ling cod, yelloweye, black rockfish, and halibut. It’s the Upper Cook Inlet Grand Slam.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get out. Mother Nature greeted us with 20mph winds and gusts to 35mph. This made traveling 60-90 miles out to the fishing grounds impossible.
I’ll try again in September.

There is some good news on the home front. The red salmon are starting to find their way into the Kenai River. On July 1st the sonar was activated and tallied 6,366 fish. By the end of the week, the daily count was three times that amount. That’s a very strong start to the late-run.
There aren’t many people fishing for red salmon right now, but those who fished have had decent success. Not many limits, but enough action to make it worth their while. Be patient, the consistent fishing should start happening in a week to 10 days.

The 4th of July was a couple of days ago, but I have to share a photo from the Kenai parade. This is my neighbor Nick’s 1933 Ford Coupe. He’s been building it over the last couple of years and this is the summer it made it’s debut. A beautiful vehicle and the nicest one in the whole parade. Congrats, Nick!
Before I end this post, I need to give credit to one of our recent guests. Jessica and her husband Bob were on a halibut trip out of Homer and took the photo you see at the top of the page. I’m definitely jealous. I’ve seen plenty of whales in Alaska, but I haven’t seen an orca before. Thank you, Jessica, for allowing me to share your photo.
See you next Sunday for a brand new fishing report.
