Red madness.
The red salmon run continues to be strong on the Kenai River. What made it even more enjoyable for me, is that I was able to spend the week fishing with old friends. I also made a few new ones too.
Our biggest problem wasn’t finding fish. The biggest problem has been finding enough freezer space for everyone. Jane did a wonderful job juggling everyone’s haul.
I started the week fishing with Mark, Grant, Colton, Donnie, and Nathaniel. Plenty of fish moving through, with guys who know what they’re doing, made for a fun day.
Seventeen years ago Mike, Jodie, Dick, and Kim were our guests for the first time. They’ve become regulars, and Jane and I are grateful they have. If you notice in the photo there is a fifth person. She’s Jenny, Dick and Kim’s daughter in law. This wasn’t her first trip to Alaska, she’s been up before with her husband Jake. I’ve got a hunch the next trip will include Jake and their children.
Yahtzee. The five of them did it all over again the next morning.
A day later, I was reunited with old friends Bill, Kenny, Rodney, and Pete. They’re all talented fisherman and had no problem getting their limits. I think I made them believers in using circle hooks for sockeyes.
I ended the week fishing with Mark and his crew. We found a great bank to start the morning, but left when a rude group decided to fish in between us. Not cool. We fished a couple of other areas, but ended up calling it by mid morning. Breakfast, sleep, and an already full freezer made the decision easy.
Had to include a photo of Kenny and Bill holding a couple of huge yellow eye rockfish they caught on Boo Kandas’ boat. These are my favorite Alaska fish to eat.
For the week ahead, we will be keeping the waders on in pursuit of red salmon even though the run is beginning to taper off. When the silver and pink salmon start to show, we will jump back in the boat to chase them.
See you next week.
