Since the Kenai River is closed to king salmon fishing until July 1st, and the bulk of the first run of red salmon are all at the Russian River, my report this week will be about saltwater fishing.

Seward, Deep Creek, and Homer are the saltwater destinations on the Kenai Peninsula. All three areas have had fantastic weather with very few cancellations. Because of the near ideal weather conditions, anglers have been able to fish the better areas that the fish are holding in. There haven’t been a lot of large halibut caught this season, but there’s been plenty of action. I’ll take the action any day.
Jane and MJ fished on Monday in Homer with Boo of Tall Tale Charters. When you fish with Boo, you know it won’t be a dull day.

I’m not kidding about the weather this year. Jane is clearly enjoying a beautiful day on the ocean.

It doesn’t surprise me that MJ was the first on deck to start the next drift for rockfish. If you’ve ever chased schools of rockfish before, you know that whoever is in the water first will usually catch the first fish. It’s not that MJ is hyper competitive, it’s that her observational skills are off the charts and she quickly figures out what works and what doesn’t and won’t forget the pattern…ever.

Here’s a non targeted species being released. Skates are fairly common in Cook Inlet. They’re terrific fighters, but not the best table fare.

Team Wisconsin, consisting of Doug, Trent, Grant, and Al, fished with Boo on Thursday. They ended up with a nice mix of halibut, p cod, and black bass. Al’s 50lber was the largest halibut of the day. Hey guys, it was great to see you again. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get out on the river the next time you’re here.
The week ahead will be much like last week for our guests. Fishing will be a combination of saltwater, fly in’s across the inlet, and treks to the Russian River. The Russian River run has been gaining strength and will easily make the escapement goal. Because of this, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has increased the red salmon limit from three to six fish. You better get ‘em while they’re here, because soon they look will be gone.
See you next week.
