Fishing Report Week Ending 6/20/21

June 20, 2021 //  by beavercreek

Careful for what you wish for.

This past week, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced the Kenai River early run king salmon fishery will be restricted to catch and release fishing from June 17th until June 30th. This measure is being taken to protect a weak run and to ensure fishing opportunities in the future.

An avid reader of the blog (George), said ADFG must be reading my blog. I don’t think they are or they would have made the change last week. Anyway, I digress.

Here’s the weekly fishing report.

The low sonar counts clearly reflected the action experienced by all anglers on the Kenai River. Fishing was extremely tough. That goes for king and red salmon.

Fortunately for me, I was guiding terrific people all week. It started on Tuesday when I was reunited with an old teammate of mine and his extended family. Steve, Heidi, Madison, Matt, Brittany, Joebie, Lewie, and Levi…it was a pleasure to fish with all of you. I wish one of the three bites we had would have stayed on, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Hey, we’ll get them next time!

Since I didn’t have any fish photos from the river from the crew, Steve let me use this pic of their saltwater adventure out of Homer. The final fillet weight was 150lbs. Nice job!

The next three days I fished with friends, Kris and John.

Over three days we had one bite, and one fish to show for our effort. This 20” rainbow was all the action we could muster. Not exactly living up to the billing of the “World Famous Kenai River…”

Thanks John and Kris, for your generosity, and more importantly your friendship. Jane and I sure enjoyed spending time with the two of you on and off the water.

Hanging out with John and Kris at the Kenai River Brewing Co.

For the week ahead

I have a couple of king trips scheduled this week, but also plan on spending a day on the Russian River. The reports from the Russian River have been slow to fair so far. Hopefully, the peak of the run will be underway by the time I get there.

Come back next Sunday to see how we do.

Btw, not only is today the first day of summer, it’s also Father’s Day. As if the day couldn’t get any better….
