In my previous post, I forgot a couple of things. First of all, Tundra Toad released a follow up video about using circle hooks to catch Kenai River sockeye salmon.
Second, I didn’t point out that you don’t have to sharpen a circle hook or rarely will it snag on a log or rock. When I fish regular “J” hooks, I have to sharpen them daily and eventually I’ll throw them away. They just don’t last long. Conversely, about the only time you have to replace a circle hook is when you lose one when a fish breaks your line.

So, when is the best time to catch sockeye salmon on the Kenai/Russian River?
Like many things in life, timing is every thing. The first run happens early June and will last until the end of the month. The second run will start mid July and the last hurrah can go until mid to late August.
Fun to catch, excellent to eat. If you haven’t fished for sockeye salmon before you should.
