The only fishing pattern I could observe last week was the nastier the weather, the better the bite. At least on the slower days we were able to enjoy the beautiful and warm sunshine.
On to the fishing report.
On Tuesday, I took out Bill, Ron, and Hogan. The plan was to hit the “morning” silver bite and be done before noon. Not only did we not catch a fish, we didn’t see anyone else catch one either. Not exactly how I wanted to start the week.

On Wednesday, it was Bill, Ron, and Hogan fishing a second day with me. The weather forecast called for early morning rain, so the crew asked if they could start when it stopped. No problemo. Fishing is suppose to be fun, right?
At 9am we hit the water with eager anticipation. We didn’t have a bite in the first hour and half, but when Bill landed the beauty above, the bite was clearly on.

Ron and Hogan followed Bill with a double, double digit silver salmon catch. Not sure if dad, or the son, has the better bragging rights…

In a one hour span we landed six fish, and missed 9 others. The most frustrating miss (or whiff) happened when the swivel the hook was attached to broke in half. Ugh! I hate it when equipment failures happen.

Even though we decided not to fish in the early morning rain on Wednesday, Bruce, a long time guest and charter member of the Beaver Creek Cabin’s All Stars, did. He found these fish before we even hit the water. I tip my hat to you Bruce for a job well done!

Thursday, I fished with my old college buddy, Al, and his nephew Brett. What a great first fish to start out the day.

The two of them had their three fish limit by lunch.

On Friday, it was Al and Brett once again. Nice weather, but not a lot of fishing action. Even though we didn’t catch many silvers, the quality was impressive.

Saturday was the final day of fishing with Al and Brett. I wish I could have sent them home with a six fish boat limit, but it wasn’t meant to be. At least neither one of them ended their Alaska fishing adventures skunked. Hey guys, it was a lot of fun talking hockey, college, and AWA wrestling over the three days. I can’t wait until we do it again next year…
For the week ahead.
When the leaves are falling, and the morning temperatures are below freezing, it can only mean one thing in my world: the guiding season is nearing the end. Considering the inconsistency of the bite, if my trip on Saturday with Al and Brett was my last, the season ended on a positive note.
Just because I’m not guiding (unless the phone rings), it doesn’t mean I’m done fishing for the year. My boat will be on the dock until early October, and I plan on using it. Besides river fishing over the next couple of weeks, I may also work in one more saltwater trip.
Come back next Sunday to see what I’m catching.
