There were definitely more silvers in the river this week than last week. That makes things a whole lot easier on me. However, having a bunch of experienced anglers in my boat didn’t hurt either.
I started the week fishing with Nelson, Donna, Matthew and Grey. The morning goal was to get Grey a salmon.
Mission accomplished.
Here he is with his father, Matthew. Even though this red salmon was turning color, the quality of the meat was excellent. It’s not often that red salmon caught in September will still be good table fare, but this one was.
Later in the morning we dropped off Donna and Grey at the cabins to dry out. In the next couple of hours there was a half hour window when the bite was really on. Here are Nelson and Matthew with the days catch.
Labor Day was Day 1 for Mike, Brent, Jake, and Ben. It was a steady bite. Fish in the box, great weather, what’s not to like about that?
Tuesday was Day 2 for Nelson, Matt, and Donna. After landing these, it was time to head back to the cabins to get Caroline.
The bite was still on and Caroline was able to land these beauties. The third and final fish for her limit came off right next to the boat. Still, a great day on the river.
Wednesday was Day 2 for Mike, Brent, Jake, and Ben. It was a better bite for them than their first day. We didn’t “get ‘em all”, but we sure had our chances.
On Day 3, it was 12 before 12. Lots of action and lots of memories. Especially the seal that tried to take the last fish away from Jake next to the boat.
On Day 4, it was 4 silvers for the day. I really thought it would be better, but to quote Brent, “it was still awesome!” It should be noted that this was the first day that there was ice on the dock and frost in the boat. Uff da.
I’ll call this Day 4.1. On Saturday, I didn’t have a scheduled trip so I asked Mike, Brent, Jake, and Ben if they wanted to try for a few more fish to bring back home to Minnesota.
I didn’t have to ask them twice.
It wasn’t great action, but the quality of the fish was there. Not a bad week overall for these guys. When all was said and done, they ended up with 37 silver salmon.
For the week ahead.
A glacier dam at the headwaters of the Kenai River recently burst. This means water levels are rising. If the water stays clean, the fishing should be decent. If not, it will be a struggle.
Come back next Sunday to see how it goes.
