There are a lot of salmon in the Kenai River and that makes for a lot of happy people. As one of my guide friends often says, “silver salmon season is the fun season”.
It’s hard to argue that.
Let’s get to the weekly fishing report.

The week started out just how the previous week ended. The silver fishing was smoking hot. Here’s Jen, Renee, Kathy and Jane back on the dock with their limit by 8am. I’ve always said that women and children out fish men. Here’s your proof.

I didn’t plan on fishing a second trip that day, but when Ed and Rick called to tell me their saltwater trip was cancelled, I was happy to get them out in the afternoon. I’m glad your Plan B on the Kenai River worked out.

The silver bite was fast and furious Tuesday morning for Bob, Trent, Grant, and Ryan. Grant and Ryan were newcomers to Alaska, but Bob and Trent last fished with me ten years ago. I’ve got a hunch they won’t wait so long to come back.
As I was cleaning fish/boat from the morning trip, Mike and Mary showed up with their limit of red salmon. The two of them have been Alaska regulars. Jane and I are happy to see them again.

On Wednesday, good friends Doug “Mush” and Cheryl spent the afternoon fishing with Jane and I. It was a little slow at first. and we missed quite a few biters, but eventually we put together a boat limit of silvers. It was a lot of fun visiting with the two of them once again.

On Thursday, Brent and Michelle joined Doug and Cheryl for a mid-morning/afternoon silver adventure. A decent bite with enjoyable people made it a fun day for me. I’d like to give a special thanks to Doug and Cheryl for all their assistance before and after our trip. Jane and I sure do appreciate your help.

Friday morning, Kathy, Renee, and Jen repeated the success they had on Tuesday. The three of them definitely have the right attitudes when it comes to fishing. Also, thanks Jen for providing a moment that I’ll never forget. The story will be told a thousand times in the boat….

Like Ed and Rick earlier in the week, Team Matthews saltwater trip was cancelled because of weather. They were looking for another fishing opportunity somewhere. Since Kathy, Renee, and Jen limited out so quickly in the morning, I was available to get them out on the river that afternoon. I know they were disappointed that they were unable to get out on the ocean, but the Kenai River became a nice backup plan.

We were rolling all week and I was looking forward to finishing it with long time friends Dan, Rod, Mike and Mary. We didn’t exactly roll on this day. Even though the photo shows a nice catch, we fished all day to put these fish in the box. Thanks guys, it was enjoyable to spend the day with the four of you.
For the week ahead.
I expect the silver run to continue to be strong. All indices are pointing towards that. If you’ve been following the blog this summer, a strong silver salmon run is a welcome alternative to the dismal king salmon return earlier this season.
Come back next week for the straight skinny on fishing the Kenai River.
