Kenai River insiders believe when 20,000 reds cross the sonar counter the river is “fishable”.
Every day last week, the daily sonar counted much more than 20,000 fish a day. The largest count came on Monday when 56,130 reds came in. It’s definitely “fishable”.
Is everybody catching limits? No. But overall it’s been good fishing. Much better than this same timeframe a year ago.

It didn’t take Leslie very long to get these fish.

Jane with a well earned stringer of red salmon.

I’ve been impressed with the size of the fish so far. This is a legitimate 10lb red salmon. Jane and I will get a total of 6 meals off of this fish.

Here’s a great moment with grandpa Ken, grandson Brantley, and an acrobatic salmon making it into the net. Memories were made for all.

Speaking of memories, I want to take this time to honor a long time family friend. On July 8th, Christa Theilen passed away at the age of 55. For you Christa, I give three claps for a life well lived. And, I give one big middle finger to cancer…

You will be missed by many!!!
For the week ahead, I expect the fishing to get even better. Come back next Sunday to see if my prediction comes true.
