2025 Kenai River King Salmon Forecast

February 9, 2025 //  by beavercreek

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has released the forecast for both the early and late run Kenai River king salmon runs. Neither are good. The early run forecast is projected to be 1,531 fish. This number is 39% below the minimum escapement goal of 3,900 fish. If this is accurate, the 2025 early run will be the second …

Striker Brand-Fishing Outerwear, Apparel, and Accessories

January 26, 2025 //  by beavercreek

I spend most of my time outside. Wearing proper clothing is a must.    Ten years ago I was looking to replace my ice fishing parka/bib system. Striker Brand was the new kid on the block and advertised a feature that no other outdoor clothing manufacturer offered at the time...their parka and bib floats. I was …

Smoking Salmon Revisted

January 19, 2025 //  by beavercreek

Kovitch’s

January 12, 2025 //  by beavercreek

For over 20 years Jane and I have been operating a cabin rental and fishing guide service. Yes, we still enjoy it. Probably the biggest reason we still do what we do is so many of our guests have become friends. Case in point, Ken and Michelle Kovitch. The Kovitch's have been coming to Alaska since 2011. They love being in …

Ken Smith

December 15, 2024 //  by beavercreek

There are things you think will never change. For me, it was seeing Ken Smith row the Kenai River. Since the day I started guiding, Ken was always there. He stood out for a couple of reasons. One, he was a guy rowing a boat amongst hundreds of power boats. Two, his clients were always catching fish. It was hard not to recognize …

Fish Chants

December 8, 2024 //  by beavercreek

Last week I blogged about fishing proverbs. This week, I’m blogging about fishing chants. There is a difference.  A fishing proverb is a saying related to fishing. A fishing chant are words repeated over and over that often bring good luck while fishing. Growing up, my father taught me this fish chant. Fishy, …
