Mark your calendars. The Alaska Board of Fisheries triennial meeting will be held in Anchorage from February 7th until February 19th.
This is a big deal. The Alaska Board of Fisheries is comprised of seven members and their purpose is to conserve and develop the fishing resource of the state. Perhaps the most important task they face is allocating fish to commercial, sport, and subsistence users.
Everybody wants their “fair share”.
Proposals are submitted by the public and this year there are 171 to be discussed. 16 are directly related to guiding.
There are numerous proposals that I am interested in besides the ones affecting guiding. Proposal 78 is about a fair allocation of fishery resources. Proposal 88 calls for an increase in the optimum escapement goal for the Kenai River late run sockeye salmon management plan. Proposal 104 calls for the increase of the optimum escapement goal of the Kenai River Late Run king salmon management plan. And, Proposal 154 increases the silver salmon August bag limit from two to three.
It’s going to be an interesting 13 days.
