Without a Kenai River king fishery to participate in, I’m currently in a lull between the early red salmon run, and the late red salmon run.
The closest freshwater salmon fishery that has been consistently good (sorry Russian River, this wasn’t your year) has been the Kasilof River, a mere 15 miles away from the cabins.
I wish I could personally provide a Kasilof River option to guests, but I sold my drift boat in 2006 to focus more on the Kenai River. It made sense at that time because the Kenai king salmon runs were stable. Not anymore. Hopefully, this trend will reverse itself before I decide to hang up my 35”x43” Beckman net for good.
In the meantime, Jane and I have been setting up trips for guests with Kasilof River guides. This past week all caught their limit of red salmon. The Kenai River won’t be far behind.

June is about over and the 4th of July will be here soon.

The biggest 4th of July celebration in Alaska happens in Seward. A parade, the Mount Marathon race, and fireworks will draw thousands of spectators to this beautiful coastal town.
Jane and I haven’t decided where we will celebrate. Wherever it is, Happy Independence Day, America!!!
