Earth Day/Arbor Day

April 28, 2024 //  by beavercreek

It was a pretty good week for the planet.

Earth Day happened on 4/22 while Arbor Day was on 4/26.

I helped the planet this week by getting rid of dying birch trees, and completely dead spruce trees ravaged by bark beetles.

I wasn’t alone in my work. I had a couple of helpers.

Eli helped me with trees that had potential of hitting a cabin, whereas the four legged helper above took care of the slash/branches.

I was talking with my buddy Todd about my moose helper. I told him many people say that a gun shot is a dinner bell for bears. I believe, in the spring of the year before the trees bloom and grasses grow, a chainsaw is a dinner bell for moose. The tender buds/shoots are exactly what a starving moose has a hankering for.

It was only minutes after I dropped this tree a young bull moose made it on the scene. I had to wait at least a half-hour before he decided he had enough and it was time to mosey on.

This week was also a good one for bird watching. The bald eagles and sand hill cranes have been out in full force.

Is this the year eaglets will make an appearance on the property? I’ve been watching eagles in this tree for years, but this is the first time I’ve seen mom sitting in the nest. Stay tuned…

The final photo for the week is from the Upper Kenai River. Friends of mine invited me to go trout fishing, but at the last minute the trip fell through. Dang. They had a great weather day and managed to land two rainbow trout.

It’s a busy week ahead if you like to celebrate. The festivities begin on 5/1 for May Day, 5/4 is Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you), and on 5/5 it’s Cinco de Mayo.

Enjoy…..in moderation!
