Help Wanted

April 14, 2024 //  by beavercreek

Are you looking for a summer job fishing in Alaska?

It’s not Jane and I looking for help, but others are.

I made a trip to Homer this past week to have Kachemak Gear Shed put an eye splice on four sections of dock rope. As I walked into their building, I saw on a bulletin board an old school help wanted note. If you’re interested in being a deckhand on a commercial boat, get a hold of Neal of the Time Bandit.

If working on the most famous crabbing/tender boat in Homer is not your thing, and you still want to work on the ocean, my friend Boo Kandas is looking for a deck hand on his sport fishing charter boat. Give Boo a call at (907) 398-1798. It won’t pay as well as the Time Bandit, but I bet you’ll have 10x the fun.

I had a couple of hours to kill while Clarence the Splice Guy worked on the rope.

Perfect.

That’s just enough time to hang out on the Homer Spit, have a cup of coffee, and take in the sights.

I spotted three anglers trying their luck.

I also saw the prettiest, newest boat in the harbor. The Poppa J custom built by Will Jahrig.

I stopped in at Ullmer’s Hardware to pick up shackles to finish the rope project. I did a double take when I walked by this commercial van. How could I not take a couple of photos of this?

The vanity license plate made me think about the Seinfeld episode where Kramer mistakenly received the license plate of a proctologist. Just Google “Kramer license plate” if you need a reminder.

I picked up the rope (nice job Clarence the Splice Guy), and headed back to Kenai. I’m now ready to get the dock in during the high tide cycle between May 7th-9th. I’ve got my fingers crossed I’ll be able to float it out problem free. If not, 500 feet of 3/4 inch rope, a couple of pulleys, and truck will get the job done.
