This week’s blogpost celebrates the life of another friend. I feel fortunate to have known Gene Miller and enjoyed our many trips fishing the Kenai River together.
I first met Gene in 2007 when he came to Alaska to fish with his son, Dick, and daughter-in-law Kim, along with their friends Mike and Jodie.
I could tell right away he was an outdoorsman. Hunting and fishing were activities he truly enjoyed.
And, like a lot of people, his first trip to Alaska was not his last. Gene ended up coming seven more times. Those trips included Dick, Kim, Mike, Jodie, grandson Jake, and Jake’s wife Jenny.

Gene holds the title of being the oldest man to catch a king salmon in my boat. He was 86 when he set the record. It was a day I won’t forget. Because his son Dick wasn’t in the boat with us, I called him to make sure he met us at the dock to share the experience with his dad. Lots of high fives and hugs.

I’ll miss seeing his smile, and his yellow rain gear.
