Useful Tool

April 10, 2022 //  by beavercreek

Useful tool.

I’ve been called that more than once, and it’s not always a compliment.

When you fish Alaska oceans and coastal streams, knowing when the high and low tides occur can be critical to fishing success. Tide books, the bible of Alaska fishing, are given away free at many retail and convenience stores. Yes, it’s that important knowing this information and Alaska businesses want you to be successful in your pursuit of fish.

I always keep a copy of a tide book in my tackle box, truck, and house. But, I haven’t shied away from technology either. Currently, I have three fishing related apps on my IPhone that I use regularly.

I’m going to focus on what I think is the best all around app: Dipnet Kenai.

In 2017, the city of Kenai developed an app called Dipnet Kenai. The intent is to assist participants in the personal use dipnet fishery. But don’t let this very specific title fool you. There is plenty of information on this app that helps the sport fisherman as well.

Features that I like include:

  • tide cycles
  • fish counts
  • weather forecast
  • maps
  • 12 live web cams on the beaches, river mouth and the city boat launch

I use this app primarily from May until October. However, there is one feature I’ll use year round: webcams. Looking at the webcams in the winter doesn’t help me catch salmon (because the runs are over), but my interest is picqued by iceflows and the views of Mt. Redoubt on a clear day.

I’d encourage all readers of this blog, coming to Alaska this summer, to download this free app.
