Despite the low forecast for king salmon in upper Cook Inlet, a group of commercial fisherman have submitted a proposal to the Alaska Board of Fisheries to lower the king salmon escapement goal for the Kenai River.
The meeting to vote on the proposition will happen at the end of March.
If passed, proposition 283 will allow additional opportunities for commercial fisherman to harvest sockeye salmon. When this happens, there will be incidental king salmon caught in their nets.
Passing the proposition makes no sense to me. With king salmon runs in peril, every fish matters, and all user groups need to share the burden of conservation.
The Kenai River Sport Fishing Association is leading the charge to prevent proposition 283 from passing. They are asking concerned sport fisherman, resident or non resident, to contact the Board of Fishery.
It’s very simple to do and will only take a couple of minutes of your time.

Thanks for getting involved and saying no to proposition 283.
