Happy 4th of July! I hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable holiday day.

On a side note, if you’re coming to the Kenai Peninsula for the 4th of July fireworks show, you’re going to be disappointed. With nearly 24 hours of daylight, it’s a little bit underwhelming. If you want to see a great show, join us for New Year’s Eve. Fireworks can start in the afternoon.

On to the weekly fishing report.

With the early Kenai River king salmon run and Russian River red salmon run winding down, the best fishing options have been the Kasilof River for red salmon (limits doubled to 6 fish on Saturday), or the always reliable ocean fishery.

I opted for the ocean.

On Tuesday, Jane and I were joined with good friends Taylor, Colette, Leslie, and Dave for a day of saltwater fishing in Homer with my buddy Boo of Tall Tale Charters.

The wind and the waves (the roughest I’ve ever experienced) kept us from fishing many of Boo’s favorite spots. But, with perseverance, we were able to put together a respectable catch of halibut, black rockfish, and pacific cod.

On Saturday, I fished the Kenai River with Todd and Kirsten.

Two trolls into the morning, Todd landed the largest salmon of his life. If you’re wondering what an early run slot fish looks like, well, Todd caught the perfect 34” buck. What a great way to close out the week.

For the week ahead.

Since the king salmon sonar counter went in on May 16th, no day has exceeded 200 king salmon. If that threshold is not met soon, it will be interesting to watch how ADFG manages the fishery throughout July.

Let’s hope the fish got the memo that it’s okay to comeback home.

See you next week.

p.s. Thanks Taylor and Colette for the fun filled adventures. We’re looking forward to your next visit.
