I’m old and loving it.

This past week I got to hang out with people I really like. From neighbors, to long time friends, it was a lot of fun.

The big fishing event that Jane, Colette, Kris, Taylor, John and I had on the calendar was a day of fishing with Boo in Homer. We were going to wing it the rest of the week.

The best laid plans often go awry…

I was cautiously optimistic of the forecast John sent me for Homer. Unfortunately, by the time Sunday arrived, the forecast was accurate. No fishing for us.

Oh well. We still made the drive to Homer because, well, it’s Homer. We walked the spit and spent some time in the business district checking out the local shops.

Spirit Lake morning

The next day we decided to spend time on a quiet lake with little wind. Spirit Lake was the destination and rainbow and dolly varden trout were the target species.

We had the lake to ourselves until late in the day when a float plane invaded our space (literally).

Taylor with one of many dolly varden trout

I started to worry when my usual spots didn’t produce any fish. Eventually, I found a pattern and the bite became steady. We had a moment where everyone caught one at the same time.

Kris with a nice dolly varden trout

Sorry Colette, for releasing the largest trout of the day before getting a picture. And, I have to apologize to John because nobody took a picture of him holding a fish.

Colette red fishing

The next day we decided to try the lower Kenai River for red salmon.

Taylor keeping the rod tip low on the follow through

We were a little late to the party. The bulk of the red salmon run is now in the middle/upper Kenai and Russian River. Oh well, it was fun giving it a try.

Taylor, Colette, Jane, John, Kris, and some old guy

A memorable week ended with a great meal at Louie’s Restaurant.

Thanks, guys for making my 60th birthday a special one.

Second Hand Fishing Reports From The Peninsula

The Russian River is the place to be right now. The sanctuary opened early, and today the limit for red salmon increases from 3 per day to 6 per day. Expect shoulder to shoulder crowds and remember to bring your own rock to stand on.

The Kasilof River is producing a fair amount of hatchery kings and red salmon. On any given tide cycle the action can be really good.

Resurrection Bay. The saltwater red salmon snagging fishery has been good and is past peak. Get your treble hooks ready and time the tide.

Homer. Weather permitting, the rockfish, cod, halibut fishing has been steady. Salmon fishing has been streaky.

Wherever you are fishing this week, good luck. See you next Sunday. Oh, and Happy Father’s Day!
